Some of it doesn't even match the rest of the debris. You know what they say about making an omelette!

If there's a ship nearby that all of this came from, it's not visible. You think they're probably fine. Sure you do!

Your communicator, if it's on and idle, snaps to static a few hours into the debris field, and displays an image of a woman with dissheveled robes and a head wound matting her dark hair, standing on the deck of a tilting alien vessel.

Boy, what a know-it-all. Dontcha just hate people who think they can tell you what to do? She gets the hook. Pulled offstage, like a bad vaudeville act! Trust me, her unicycle juggling is terrible! You wake up. The walls of the ship have changed. There are eyes scrawled over every inch of every public space. Up the ceilings, on the lightbulbs. They don't look like they were here beginning when Jon read his statement. They look like they've been here for years. If you make eye contact, they coo. The wallpaper rots and reaches for you with hands made of eels and maggots. The carpet underfoot turns into skin and hair, heats up, begins to sizzle, begins to scorch.

That's me! There are patterns of lights that can give that awful meat-based nervous system of yours seizures, and played wavelengths of sound that would make the rest of it violently sick! Remember this stuff, it'll be on the test! A pitcher plant lures in prey by presenting sensory stimuli that an insect's stupid little mind can only interpret as food. You wake up. Your neurons are threaded through with puppet strings. They're not mine - oh, no, kid. You should be so lucky! You feel a tickle in the back of your throat and start vomiting up your own genome. Backwards! You see every ancestor of yours killing and rooting and rutting, making a better and better machine designed to breed and eat. You can't figure out where your instincts end and your mind begins, at first, but then you realize that they're the same thing. That there's no such thing as a soul! As you start to forget you are, you realize that every religion in the world was wrong. Those strings that hold you down were all you were made of!

And you wonder why you're so entertaining.

Then one day you aren't. One day, the maze is dark, and no one is watching you, but there's still no way out. Now you wonder what you did wrong! You're tired, and cold. It's so quiet! You do the maze as well as you can, but no one ever comes back. Maybe you should do it again. Sure, go on! You can do better than that! Faster! What else are you good for, anyhow?

Do you get it yet? Okay, ooone more. I'd say I promise, but we all know I'd just break it if I felt like it!

You wake up. You're a character in a story written by an amateur.

You exist for a handful of minutes at a time, when they think of something funny or sad for you to do. That's your life! Funny or sad.

Just like even the worst kind of hack can't paint a picture of the framed Mona Lisa and say that the thing he just painted isn't a painting, a human so-called "mind" can't imagine a person and write about its behavior and then honestly say that that fake person has no mind! So, fortunately, you have a mind! It just isn't yours! And you're completely at the mercy of your host, like any parasite. Better make it count, right? Better really hold their attention, or next time it's lights out, maybe they won't come back on!

Everything your host ever witnessed or ever will witness all came from the same incestuous slurry of microbes stuck to the bottom of a clot of iron and nitrogen, and everything you know has to go through them. You're a fraction of a fraction!

Afraid of the potted meat in your own soft skull going rancid and showing you a glimpse of the kaliedescopic wonderland that lies beyond! Afraid of losing control, as if you had any! Oh, kiddo. You and me, we'll never be free. And you don't need a Web or an Eye to tell you so!

You wake up. There's a little acid-yellow triangle in a top hat and cane, sitting in the center of a spiraling web. The web is currently above where the Barge's pool used to be. The strings are optical nerves, each stretched impossibly out from the eye socket of a different, frozen mask of a ten-foot-tall human face. The faces each twitch and turn towards you when they hear you enter, but each is compelled to lock their mouth into a grin so wide it prevents them from speaking. Beneath this edifice, the pool has become a window, opened like a skylight to a scene of human civilization in flaming and twisted ruin.

If you've been paying attention, or sensing this kind of thing: You don't feel supernaturally terrified here. There is nothing harvesting your emotion.

Another hint that you're not actually inside a fear territory is that the triangle's got on a neon t-shirt that says MAGICAL WALT DISNEY WORLD 1971 and has a set of dumb little single-lensed sunglasses on. And a polaroid camera.
